Double-pick weeks in survivor pools

In a double-pick week you make two picks, and in most contests both must win. Two good favorites together are far less safe than either alone, and every double week uses up an extra team. Plan the double weeks first and keep enough strong teams for them.

Both picks have to win

Take the two strongest favorites on the Week 4 board: the Baltimore Ravens at 83.2% and the Minnesota Vikings at 80.5%. If both had to win, the pair would survive about 67% of the time. Doubling up turns a comfortable week into a risky one.

Splash Sports contests score double weeks this way. In the Splash seasons we track, every entry that split a double week, one pick winning and one losing, was eliminated.

Double weeks use up your teams

Each double week needs one more team than a normal week, and you still can never reuse one. In this season's Splash contests that adds up fast:

ContestDouble weeksTeams needed all seasonTeams left over
The Big Splash3, 6, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16266
The Wave3, 6, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16266
The Ripple3, 6, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16266
The Survivor World Championship9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16248

With only a handful of teams to spare, the late double weeks are where entries run out of good options. A team that looks like an easy single pick in October may be what gets you through a double week in December.

A week where you must pick two teams instead of one. In most contests, including Splash Sports, both picks must win for the entry to survive.

How do double-pick weeks change survivor strategy?

They use an extra team each time and make the week riskier, since two wins are needed. Save enough strong teams for the double weeks, especially late in the season.

How many teams do you need in The Big Splash?

26. It runs 18 weeks with double picks in weeks 3, 6, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, which leaves 6 of the 32 teams unused.
